Yucky! Fun! and Turtles!

I was sooo sick for the past few days! Some kind of flu or bug or something.

I haven't been sick like that since I was a kid! So glad it is over.

I'm traveling to DC on Thursday for a conference. I'm hoping to meet up with Alfia for yoga and science! Ooooh, fun!

So, this question is pretty played out, but I'm still struggling with Supta Kurmasana feeling in any way comfortable...For those of you who had to work at it, and open up the body to get into this pose...Any tips on what to do to open up the body. Should I hang out while watching TV each night holding my leg behind my head one at a time? Should I dislocate my hips? JK ;)

supta kurmasana was a HUGE struggle for me. my original teachers would put me in SK by having us sit up and they would put our feet in, then we would lie flat and they would bind our hands. for about a year i would come out of kurmasana and just try to bind my own hands- which was a long process in itsself- i would cinch myself in with a strap until i could do it without. likewise i would work eka pada (sitting up) on each side and trying to do dwi pada, until i could finally get my feet in on my own. and then another long process of putting both parts together. i am now able to get myself in fully on my own, but i still feel this weird need to do the hand bind in kurmasana before i sit up and do the full thing.
hope this is helpful!
p.s. Alfia is THE BEST!

Thanks for the tips CH :)!

I'm going to try this approach for a while.

Hi, Elaina:
I am very exited about you visit!

Remind me about SK when we meet; I will show you a good hip opener, which helped me a lot (not that I am totally comfortable there yet, but considering the baseline...)

Tova, thank you!

Hey Elaina! I've got some advice for that one, although it's coming from a more Anusara perspective. I say lay on your back with your right leg straight out and grounded as much as possible. Lift your left leg and grab your left foot. Then do everything you can to firm your muscles in, pull to the bone, even pull your femur bone into your hip socket and tuck your butt. Then keep your inner left thigh energetically hugging in as you push your foot and hands together to slowly get your knee safely to the floor next to your ribs, you can totally round your upper back and lift your head up to start too. I would keep at that until your knee is right on the floor and you can keep your right thigh decently rooted into the ground. Then keep hugging in and pressing your hands into your left foot to root into the hip as you stretch your foot slowly toward Supta Padangusthasana I, but keeping your left knee on the ground. I have hell with Supta P. 1, but I find that if I can get my knee to the floor, then it just takes a slight hamstring opening to get my leg behind my head. So just do that on both sides. Hope this helps, I've just found that really pulling muscularly in the bone and the hipsfrom all directions actually helps you open (even though that seems counter-productive sometimes). So, I hope this helps. :)

Inner Spiral, baby! Big time. After hugging in like Jeremiah sayas but before externally rotating the leg and before trying to get it behind your head. Counter intuitive but very effective. Good luck.

Thanks Jeremiah & Christina! :) I've started using these tips, can't get my knees to the ground yet, but love this method!

Hi, Elaina:

Have you reached home safely?
I had such a good time with you! You are an incredibly lovely person, just beautiful.
I remembered though that I promised to take you to the shala and then forgot. So sorry! We will rectify this in November, right?
Good night!
